Over 630 Greenhouses Around Tashkent Burn Coal and Even Old Tires – Ecological Party

Members of the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan have filed an official request with the General Prosecutor’s Office regarding air pollution in Tashkent. According to party representatives, the capital’s environment suffers from continuous emissions of harmful substances, originating not only from vehicles and industrial enterprises but also from numerous greenhouses located around the city.

Research shows that within a radius of 20–30 kilometers from Tashkent, over 630 greenhouses operate on approximately 1,314 hectares. Among them, as reported by party members, more than 60% use coal and other polluting fuel sources, including old rubber tires, which sharply worsen air quality in the region. Such fuel not only harms the environment but also poses a serious health risk to the residents of Tashkent.

It is noteworthy that using low-quality coal and combustible waste, such as tires, produces toxic emissions that linger in the air and spread to nearby residential areas. The harmful substances released when burning tires and coal contain carcinogens and heavy metals, which have long-term effects on lungs and increase the risk of chronic diseases.

Why Do Greenhouses Pollute the Air?

Many greenhouses around Tashkent lack modern filtration systems, and their owners prefer cheaper fuel to reduce costs. The use of coal and rubber waste has become common practice, especially during the cold season, when greenhouses need heating to maintain productivity. However, this method has devastating consequences for both the environment and the health of residents. Experts emphasize that such practices are unacceptable and urge the transition to more eco-friendly and safe heating options, such as gas installations or electric systems powered by renewable energy sources.

Systematic inspections and monitoring of greenhouse activities are essential. The public has long been advocating for stricter environmental regulations and the introduction of strict measures for all facilities that continue to use coal and other harmful materials.

Today’s situation requires urgent and decisive action from the authorities. We cannot allow businesses to endanger the health of our citizens and the city’s environmental safety for the sake of cost reduction.

The Future Lies in Clean Technologies

The Ecological Party, reminding of its pre-election goals, emphasized its commitment to achieving a significant reduction in harmful emissions by 2030, including cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 65% and shifting towards more eco-friendly transportation and energy sources. Transitioning greenhouses to cleaner energy sources will not only improve air quality but also enhance the quality of the produce grown in these greenhouses.

The party pledged to continue public oversight of the environmental situation in Tashkent and to insist that state authorities strengthen measures to prevent further air pollution.
