In the capital, a fraudster was arrested for devising an original scheme to scam couriers using his mobile phone. Frequently reading warnings about scammers on social media, Bobur (name changed) decided to come up with a new strategy to make easy money, unknown to the wider public. He targeted couriers, assuming they would not report the fraud to the authorities due to the relatively small amounts of money involved.
It all began on January 25 of this year, when Bobur contacted one of the delivery services through social media and arranged a meeting with a courier named Nozimjon. He asked the courier to pick up three women’s scarves at a specified address in the Uchtepa district, paying 330,000 soums for them, and promised to reimburse the money along with the delivery fee once the item was delivered to another address.
However, Nozimjon was unaware that instead of scarves, the package contained ordinary sheets of paper. Unsuspecting, the courier handed over the money to a young man and proceeded to the delivery address, where no one was waiting for him. Bobur did not answer any phone calls.
Two more couriers were scammed in a similar manner — Jaloliddin, who lost 350,000 soums, and Otabek, who lost 170,000 soums.
