Six Uzbek citizens were detained by Turkish police at Izmir Airport for attempting to smuggle 9 kg of gold in an unusual and extremely dangerous manner—the precious metal had been surgically implanted in their genitals.

According to local media, the women arrived in Turkey on a flight from the United Arab Emirates, where they were met by a man in a car. However, the Anti-Smuggling Unit already had information about the planned illegal transport of valuables.

On October 2, as the women exited the airport, police detained them along with the man who had arrived to meet them. During a search of the car and passengers’ belongings, 82 gold bars weighing 110 grams each, 18 gaming consoles and controllers (Playstation), and three smartphones were found. However, the most shocking discovery came later—upon thorough inspection, it was revealed that an additional 84 gold bars had been surgically implanted in the women’s genitals.

By court order, the women had to undergo surgical procedures to extract the smuggled gold bars. The total weight of the gold they were carrying in their bodies amounted to 9 kg and 240 grams, meaning each woman was carrying over 1.5 kilograms of gold.

The total amount of smuggled gold, including what was found in the car, came to 18.5 kg, valued at 55 million Turkish lira, or approximately 1.5 million dollars. The women couriers, along with the man who was meeting them, were arrested and are now awaiting trial.

This case raises numerous questions about how these women were drawn into such a dangerous activity. It also sheds light on the scale of smuggling operations that continue to thrive on an international level. What’s particularly concerning is that such extreme methods, like transporting gold inside the human body, are still being used by smugglers despite the severe risks to life and health.
